DESCRIPTION

ADRIAEN DE GRYEF (Antwerp, ca. 1670 - Brussels, 1715).
"Still life of hunting".
Oil on panel.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 28 x 37 cm; 51 x 60 cm (frame).
This still life of hunting of Adriaen de Gryef is part of the Flemish tradition of the venatorio still life, a genre that combined technical virtuosity and a clear symbolic load associated to the abundance, the dominion of the nature and the social prestige. The scene takes place in a domestic space in semi-darkness, constructed by means of a complex organization of planes that leads the eye from the foreground, filled with game, slaughtered birds and utensils, to an architectural and landscape background that adds depth and air to the composition. The presence of a female figure, serene and observant, introduces a human element that qualifies the purely descriptive character of the still life and brings it closer to genre painting.
The pictorial quality of the work is high and is especially evident in the material treatment of the surfaces. De Gryef demonstrates a sure mastery of the brushstroke by suggesting the softness and weight of the feathers, the muted shine of the metals and the organic consistency of the animal fur, all articulated through a restrained palette of ochers, earths and golds, enlivened by reddish accents that energize the scene without breaking its overall harmony. The warm and selective lighting not only models the volumes, but also creates a dense and enveloping atmosphere that reinforces the silent drama of the whole.
Compared to other hunting still lifes by De Gryef himself, usually more focused on the frontal display of the prey as trophies, this work stands out for its greater scenographic and narrative complexity. Here, the artist does not limit himself to showing hunting as an accumulation of objects, but introduces a subtle tension between life and death: killed birds coexist with living animals, domestic order is altered by the disorder of hunting, and the reflective stillness of the human figure contrasts with the implicit dynamism of the animal world. This play of oppositions enriches the symbolic reading of the painting and moves it away from a mere exercise in ostentation.
Adriaen de Gryef (or Gryeff) was the son and disciple of the still life painter Jacques de Claeuw (1641-1676). He probably completed his training with the master Frans Snyders, and in 1687 he was enrolled as a master in the Ghent Painters' Guild, although in the following decade he also worked in other Flemish cities. His paintings will generally be of small format, and are characterized by a meticulous and detailed execution. He is currently represented in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the Brukenthal in Sibiu (Romania), the Royal Museums of Belgium, the Watford Museum, the Fitzwilliam in Cambridge, the Maidstone Museum and the Hunterian Art Gallery of the University of Glasgow, among other public and private collections.
