BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Madrid School; End of XVIII century.
"St. Joseph with Child.
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 32 x 23 cm; 52 x 44 cm (frame).
The author of this work presents the figure of St. Joseph with the Child Jesus in a scene of deep devotional intimacy. The little boy is placed on his father's knees, dressed only with the cloth of purity, and directs his gaze towards him, transmitting to him, in spite of his infantile innocence, the conscience of his relevance in the Christian religion. Joseph surrounds him with a protective gesture, trying to gather him in his lap, and gives him a look full of admiration and tenderness. Several putti, carrying carpentry tools, symbol of the saint's trade, and what appears to be a basket of cherries, complete the composition with delicate symbolic nuances alluding to the Passion and redemptive sweetness.
From the stylistic point of view, the painting reflects the sensitivity of the Madrid school of the late eighteenth century, in which the baroque heritage survives but sifted by a sweeter and more restrained taste. The scene abandons the intense dramatism of the previous century to lean towards a more intimate and affective expression, in accordance with the enlightened religiosity and the growing interest in domestic virtues. The light, more uniform and clearer, softly models the figures and attenuates the hallmarks, while the brushstrokes become more delicate and polished. This formal evolution connects with the transition towards the first academicism and the incipient neoclassicism, where compositional clarity, graceful attitudes and serene idealization progressively replace the baroque theatricality, without renouncing the devotional emotion that constitutes the spiritual core of the work.
