"Ecce homo.
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 49.5 x 40 cm; 67 x 57 cm (frame).
The painting represents Christ after the flagellation, crowned with thorns and presented to the people, according to the Gospel passage in which Pilate pronounces the words "Ecce homo" ("Behold the man"). The iconography, with a deep meditative charge, was widely spread in the Spain of the sixteenth century for its ability to arouse compassion and recollection in the faithful, in tune with the spiritual postulates of the Counter-Reformation.
The composition is concentrated in an almost absolute foreground of the bust of Christ, whose head, slightly inclined and crowned with thorns, is cut out against a neutral and dark background. This resource, characteristic of the Spanish naturalist tradition, eliminates any narrative distraction and directs the attention towards the expression of the face, the true emotional core of the work. The elevated gaze, veiled by suffering, together with the subtle presence of tears and wounds, intensifies the pathos contained, without falling into excessive dramatism.
From the stylistic point of view, the painting shows a marked tenebrism: the light falls laterally on the face and torso, modeling the volumes through a marked contrast between light and shadow. This chiaroscuro, heir to the Italian naturalistic currents spread in Spain through artists such as Ribera or Zurbarán, is translated here into a dense and silent atmosphere. The brushstroke, soft and melted in the flesh tones, contributes to give the figure an almost tangible presence, reinforcing the human dimension of the Redeemer.
