The painting fully responds to the aesthetic principles of the Cuzco School, one of the most singular artistic phenomena of the Peruvian viceroyalty. Emerging in the 17th century after the arrival of European models, especially from Seville, and consolidated during the 18th century, this school developed its own language based on the synthesis between Western pictorial tradition and Andean sensibility. The progressive autonomy of the workshops gave rise to a style recognizable by its frontality, hieratism, ornamental richness and preference for dark backgrounds that enhance the figures.
The present work, ascribed to the Cuzco School of the 18th century, represents the Virgin Mary in her invocation of the Virgin of Bethlehem, holding the Child Jesus in a frontal attitude and close to the viewer. The composition is organized around the monumental figure of the Mother, whose serene and oval face, with delicate features and melancholic look, concentrates the devotional load of the image. The Child, blessing with his right hand, reinforces the salvific character of the representation.
Among the most outstanding singularities of the school is the decorative treatment of the surfaces. In this work, the Virgin's mantle is profusely enriched with applied golden motifs that evoke textile embroidery, recalling the symbolic and material importance of textiles in the Andean world. The floral frame surrounding the scene is another characteristic feature. The absence of deep perspective and the emphasis on two-dimensionality reinforce the iconic character of the image, conceived for devotional contemplation rather than narrative. The frontality and statism convey solemnity, while the softness in the modeling of the faces reveals the assimilation of European models reinterpreted with local sensibility. As a whole, the work exemplifies how the Cuzco School transformed the Western pictorial heritage into a language of its own.
