DESCRIPTION
Spanish school, 17th century.
"St. Christopher with the infant Jesus."
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 81.5 x 96.5 cm, 97 x 61.5 cm (frame).
The work depicts St. Christopher crossing the river while carrying the Infant Jesus on his shoulders. The saint appears as a monumental figure, with a robust anatomy and an effortful attitude, leaning on his staff. He wears a short tunic and a striking red cloak that adds dynamism and drama to the composition. The Child blesses and holds the crucifix orb, while in the upper part there are angel heads among clouds. In the background we can distinguish the figure of the hermit with a lantern, a traditional element of this iconography.
Stylistically it responds to the Spanish baroque naturalism of the 17th century, with influence of the tenebrism spread in Spain after Caravaggio. It is probably a workshop work destined for parish or private devotion.
Contextually, it is inscribed in the religiosity after the Council of Trent, which promoted clear and emotive images for teaching and popular piety. Saint Christopher, protector of travelers, was one of the most widespread devotions in 17th century Spain.
