BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Flemish or Italian school; early 17th century.
"The coronation of thorns".
Oil on panel.
It has a frame of the nineteenth century.
Measurements: 123 x 96 cm; 146 x 118 cm (frame).
The episode of the Coronation of thorns, related in the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Mark, was one of the most represented themes in European painting for its intense dramatic charge and its ability to move the viewer. The scene shows the moment when Christ, after being scourged, is mocked by the soldiers, who ironically proclaim him "king of the Jews" while they impose on him the crown of thorns and hand him a reed as a scepter. In the composition that occupies us the figure of the Redeemer is located in the central axis, contrasts by its serene and resigned attitude in front of the contained violence of those who surround him. The chromatic palette, rich in earthy tones and warm shades, as well as the careful treatment of textures, hair, fabrics, armor, evidence the possible influence of the Flemish tradition, famous for its technical thoroughness and its ability to describe with almost tactile precision every detail. At the same time, the vigorous modeling of the bodies and the dramatic use of light allow us to consider a proximity to certain Italian areas of the early Baroque, where chiaroscuro becomes a vehicle of emotional intensity.
At the beginning of the 17th century, both in Flanders and in Italy, religious painting underwent a renewal driven by the ideals of the Counter-Reformation: narrative clarity, affective intensity and truthfulness in representation. This work fully participates in that spirit, combining descriptive precision and restrained drama to offer a powerful and deeply human vision of one of the most painful moments of the Passion.
