"Still life".

The Spanish still life painting of the nineteenth century maintains a constant dialogue with the tradition of the Golden Age, especially with the sober naturalism and symbolic load inherited from the Baroque. Although the nineteenth-century artistic context was marked by the irruption of new currents, such as Romanticism or Realism, the still life persisted as a genre where artists found a space of continuity with the classical models.
The Baroque influence is perceived, above all, in the treatment of light and composition. The legacy of masters such as Francisco de Zurbarán or Juan Sánchez Cotán can be seen in the use of dark backgrounds, directed lighting and the emphasis on the texture of the objects, which acquire an almost tactile presence. Fruits and everyday utensils are arranged with a compositional economy that emphasizes their materiality and, at times, suggests symbolic readings linked to the transience of life. However, the 19th century introduced its own nuances, such as a certain taste for decorative detail and, in some cases, a gentler and less ascetic approach than that of the Baroque. Thus, the Spanish nineteenth-century still life is not a mere repetition, but a reinterpretation.
