DESCRIPTION
SEBASTIANO CONCA (Gaeta, 1680 - Naples, 1764).
"Saint Cecilia".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 87 x 123 cm, 119 x 155,5 cm (frame).
The work represents Saint Cecilia, one of the saints most frequently associated with sacred music in the Italian Baroque tradition. The saint appears seated in the center of the composition, holding a score and raising her gaze towards heaven in an attitude of mystical inspiration. Around her are several musical angels that reinforce the celestial character of the scene: one plays a violin in the upper right, while another plays a keyboard instrument in the foreground. On the left, two small putti complete the composition providing softness and allegorical sense.
The scene is conceived with a strong theatrical and devotional sense, characteristic of late Roman Baroque. The warm and enveloping lighting softly models the faces and fabrics, while the wide and fluid folds of the draperies create an elegant and refined rhythm. The chromaticism, based on pink, ochre, deep blue and gold tones, fully responds to the decorative taste developed in Rome during the first half of the 18th century.
Sebastiano Conca was one of the main representatives of the late Roman Baroque, heir to the tradition of Carlo Maratta, combining classicist elegance with a more sentimental and decorative language. In this work we can observe several features close to his production and his circle: the figures of soft and delicate anatomy, the idealized faces of serene expression, the harmonic composition and the musical and celestial atmosphere treated with great refinement.
Particularly significant is the delicacy of the flesh tones, the sweetness of the feminine types and the vaporous treatment of the light, common elements in the painting of Conca and his Roman-Napolitan environment. Likewise, the iconography of Saint Cecilia surrounded by musical angels was a recurring theme in 18th century Italian painting, destined both for private devotion and ecclesiastical decoration.
Sebastiano Conca was one of the leading painters of the late Italian Baroque. He was born in Gaeta in 1680 and initially trained in Naples, influenced by artists such as Francesco Solimena. He later moved to Rome, where he developed an elegant and luminous style inspired by Carlo Maratta.
Specializing in religious, allegorical and mythological scenes, he was noted for his harmonious compositions, delicate figures and rich chromatic effects. He worked for important churches and aristocratic families, becoming a leading figure in 18th century Roman painting.
He was an important member of the Accademia di San Luca and directed a very active workshop, whose influence spread throughout Italy and Spain. He died in Naples in 1764, being considered one of the last great masters of the Italian Baroque before the full development of the Rococo.
