DESCRIPTION
The work represents the episode of the adoration of the Magi, one of the most widespread scenes in Baroque Christian iconography. The composition shows the Virgin holding the Child while one of the Magi kneels offering his gifts, accompanied by other figures and secondary characters that complete the scene under a barely hinted architecture. In the upper part there is an angelic group among clouds that reinforces the celestial character of the event.
The painting is part of the Italian religious tradition of the 17th century, a period marked by the full development of the Baroque and the influence of the Counter-Reformation. After the Council of Trent, the Church promoted a painting more emotionally close to the faithful, capable of transmitting devotion through theatrical compositions, dramatic lighting and expressive figures. Italy, and especially centers such as Rome, Naples, Bologna and Venice, became the great European artistic focus of this new Baroque language.
Small devotional compositions such as this one were very common in private environments and religious collections, especially executed on copper or small format supports that allowed a meticulous finish and an intense chromatic richness. This type of work was intended both for intimate contemplation and for small domestic oratories.
The scene presents several characteristic features of Italian Baroque painting: the warm chromatism, the enveloping atmosphere, the soft light transitions and the compositional dynamism inherited from the Bolognese and Roman tradition. The emotional sensitivity of the figures and the intimate character of the representation fully respond to the devotional spirit of 17th century Italian baroque.
The frame, with tracery and ornamentation inspired by medieval models, corresponds however to a 20th century neo-Gothic manufacture, added later for decorative and presentational purposes.
