DESCRIPTION
Italian school of the XVII century.
"Madonna and Child crowned by angels".
Oil on panel.
Measurements: 33 x 28 cm, 44,5 x 39 cm (frame).
The work represents the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus while two angels fly over the scene placing a crown on his head, iconography related to the glorification and Marian exaltation. The Child appears blessing the viewer and holding a small fruit, while the landscape in the background and the symmetrical arrangement of the angels bring balance and serenity to the composition.
The painting is part of the Italian religious tradition of the 17th century, a period marked by the full development of the Baroque and by the strong influence of the Counter-Reformation promoted after the Council of Trent. In this context, religious art acquired an essentially devotional and emotional function, seeking to bring sacred figures closer to the faithful through more human, gentle and accessible images.
During the 17th century, Italy continued to be the main European artistic center, especially cities such as Rome, Bologna, Venice and Naples. The Italian school developed a pictorial language characterized by the refinement of drawing, compositional harmony and the use of warm, luminous colors. Marian representations occupied a central place in this production, destined for churches as well as private oratories and devotional collections.
The present work shows several features typical of Italian Baroque painting: the idealized delicacy of the faces, the softness of the flesh tones, the elegant treatment of the drapery and the serene atmosphere of the composition. The monumental disposition of the Virgin and the grace of the angels recall models derived from the Bolognese and Roman tradition influenced by artists such as Guido Reni and Carlo Maratta.
Likewise, the balance between spirituality and idealized beauty fully responds to the Italian devotional taste of the 17th century, where Marian images sought to convey both human closeness and celestial exaltation.
