In this work, Luca Giordano builds a scene of intense spirituality and drama around the figure of Saint Bruno, founder of the Carthusian Order. The painting stands out not only for its visionary atmosphere and the expressive strength of its characters, but also for a detail pointed out by Nicola Spinosa: one of the monks represented could be a self-portrait of Giordano himself. It would be the third character to the right of the saint, shown half-length and with his gaze directed towards the protagonist, a resource that would discreetly introduce the presence of the artist within the mystical episode represented.

The artist represents the founder of the Carthusian Order immersed in a visionary and mystical experience, surrounded by monastic figures whose gestures intensify the climate of religious fervor. The scene, dominated by a dark and turbulent atmosphere, seems to develop between earthly reality and the irruption of the supernatural, one of the great themes of 17th century Counter-Reformation art. The composition immediately reveals Giordano's belonging to the Neapolitan school, characterized by the expressive use of chiaroscuro, the theatricality of emotions and the compositional dynamism inherited from the Baroque tradition initiated by Caravaggio.
