Devotional scene that represents the Virgin Mary under the invocation of the Immaculate Conception, one of the most spread and venerated themes in the American colonial art, in the composition, the Virgin appears standing, with her hands joined in an attitude of prayer and the serene look directed to the spectator. She wears a white tunic and a wide blue mantle decorated with golden stars, colors symbolically associated with purity and heaven. On her head, two angels hold a crown, emphasizing her celestial character and her condition of queen of heaven.
The iconography responds to the baroque model spread by the Spanish tradition, although from the stylistic point of view, the painting shows characteristic features of viceregal art: use of intense colors, decorative delicacy and a deeply religious and didactic intention. The work also evidences the cultural fusion typical of the viceregal world. Although it follows European models, especially Spanish, it incorporates local sensibilities in the treatment of color, ornamentation and the expression of the characters. This makes the painting a valuable testimony of religiosity and art in America during the colonial period.
