"The birth of the Virgin".

The scene represents the birth of Mary, an episode coming from the apocryphal gospels and widely spread by the catholic devotional tradition, especially after the Counter-Reformation, when the exaltation of the Virgin acquired a central importance in the spirituality and in the arts.
The composition is organized in several narrative planes that articulate the domestic space and the supernatural. In the center, St. Anne holds the newborn while a servant girl bows affectionately to the child. To the left, St. Joachim appears seated, aged and contemplative, reinforcing the human and intimate dimension of the event. Above them, in a space partially veiled by dark curtains, a reclining female figure introduces an atmosphere of domestic seclusion that brings the scene closer to the everyday genre. However, the irruption of the angel on the far right breaks the earthly intimacy and transforms the birth into a providential event. The angelic figure, of great scenic presence, points towards the interior of the scene and acts as a mediator between the spectator and the sacred mystery.
One of the most interesting aspects of the painting is precisely its narrative character. The artist does not limit himself to depicting an isolated instant, but builds a continuous visual narrative. In the architectural background, small secondary figures can be observed in full domestic activity, probably preparing the child's bath or arranging cloths and objects necessary for the birth. This resource, frequent in Baroque painting, enriches the scene and offers a more complex and dynamic reading, where the everyday and the divine coexist in the same pictorial space.
From the stylistic point of view, the work responds to the characteristics of the late baroque Cordovan school. Cordoba developed during the 17th century a pictorial tradition deeply marked by the tenebrist naturalism derived from the influence of Seville and, especially, of Francisco de Zurbarán and Juan de Valdés Leal. In this painting we notice the use of strong hallmarks of light, with large areas of half-light that focus attention on the faces and hands, the expressive centers of the composition. The dramatic lighting not only models the figures, but also creates an emotional atmosphere of intimacy and contemplation.
