The representation of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary fully responds to the Spanish Baroque devotional tradition, inspired by the iconographic models spread by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and his circle. The saint appears with a long bust, cut out against a background barely defined by a soft sky, a resource that concentrates all the attention on the spiritual intensity of the figure. She wears a monastic habit and wears a crown, attributes that allude simultaneously to her royal status and her ascetic renunciation after the death of Louis IV of Thuringia.
The recollected attitude, with his hands crossed on his chest while holding a cross and raising his gaze to the sky, underlines the contemplative and mystical character of the composition. The painter dispenses here with the usual scenes of charity with the poor and lepers to privilege an image of intimate devotion and spiritual exaltation. The softness of the features, the delicate lighting and the contained emotional tone reveal the influence of Sevillian painting of the 17th century, particularly the kind and pious language developed by Murillo.
The work stands out for its devotional efficacy and deeply human sensibility, where the saint's nobility is transformed into humility and religious fervor. As a whole, it is a representative example of Spanish Baroque painting aimed at private contemplation and the exaltation of Christian virtues.
