"Christ on Calvary.
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 117 x 83.5 cm; 129 x 97 cm (frame).
The composition shows Jesus crucified in the moment after the death, with the head inclined and the body still suspended on the cross, while two angels collect in chalices the blood that flows from his wounds, clear allusion to the Eucharistic mystery and the redemption of humanity.the work fully responds to the devotional language promoted by the Counter-Reformation, where the religious image should move the faithful and encourage pious meditation. The artist concentrates attention on the anatomy of Christ, modeled with marked naturalism and a dramatic illumination that emerges from a dark and stormy background. The presence of clouds, the eclipsed moon and the twilight landscape intensify the supernatural and tragic sense of the scene, while the skull at the foot of the cross recalls the symbolism of Golgotha as the place of redemption from original sin.
From the stylistic point of view, the painting shows the influence of the tenebrism spread in Spain during the seventeenth century from the Caravaggist models. The contrast between light and shadow, together with the chromatic sobriety and the restrained expressiveness of the angelic figures, place the work in the sphere of Castilian or Andalusian religious painting of a devotional nature. The background landscape, with idealized architectures barely visible in the half-light, also introduces a symbolic and spiritual rather than descriptive component.
