The scene takes place in a nocturnal and intimate atmosphere, where the Virgin, kneeling next to the Child, occupies the spiritual center of the composition, surrounded by the shepherds who contemplate the miracle with an attitude of devotion and amazement. The painting follows a compositional model developed by Jacopo Bassano and his workshop, whose interpretations of biblical themes enjoyed enormous diffusion in Italy and Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries. Bassano's influence can be seen in the scenic conception of the work, characterized by the proximity of the characters, the humble and rural setting, and the use of lighting effects intended to enhance the drama and emotion of the sacred event.
The Child Jesus appears as the main focus of light and attention, a frequent resource in the late Venetian tradition, which turns the Gospel episode into a visual experience charged with spirituality. Around him are arranged the Virgin, St. Joseph and several shepherds who bow reverently towards the newborn, while a group of angels appear among the clouds announcing the arrival of the Savior. The presence of everyday elements and popular figures contributes to humanize the biblical story and bring it closer to the viewer.
From the stylistic point of view, the work presents the typical characteristics of 17th century Italian painting: a dynamic composition, a marked contrast between light and shadow and a fluid brushstroke that gives the figures a liveliness. The chromatic richness, dominated by warm and earthy tones, as well as the attention paid to atmospheric effects, reinforce the connection with the Venetian pictorial tradition derived from Bassano.
