Circle of ANTONIO TEMPESTA (Florence, 1555-Rome, 1630); Italy, 17th century.
"Battle, possibly from the life of Constantine".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 175 x 222 cm.
This monumental composition represents a battle scene probably linked to the life cycle of the emperor Constantine, developed with a strong narrative character and a strong sense of movement. The scene is organized by an accumulation of figures in combat, cavalry in action and banners that reinforce the epic reading of the episode, underlining the heroic and propagandistic character of the historical representation. The work is situated at the beginning of the Baroque period, although it preserves clear traits of the language of late Mannerism, perceptible in the compositional complexity, the density of figures and the almost turbulent dynamism of the scene. The use of chiaroscuro contributes to intensify the drama, creating hallmarks that reinforce the sense of chaos and violence of the confrontation.
Because of its stylistic characteristics, the work can be linked to the environment of the workshop of Antonio Tempesta, one of the great specialists in painting and engraving of historical scenes and battles between the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Initially trained with Santi di Tito and in contact with the Florentine and Roman artistic environment, Tempesta developed a very effective visual language for the representation of war episodes, characterized by narrative clarity within compositions of great complexity.
His production as an engraver was particularly influential, with more than 1,800 prints dedicated to biblical, mythological and war themes, which contributed decisively to the diffusion of his compositional models throughout Europe. His association with Flemish artists in Rome, such as Otto van Veen, further enriched his iconographic repertoire and his conception of the historical image.
The present work reflects precisely that tradition of large-format narrative painting, conceived to visually impact the viewer through the intensity of movement and the density of action. Its execution suggests the participation of an artist from Tempesta's circle or workshop, who adapts his models faithfully within a language fully in keeping with early Baroque taste.
