BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

A follower of FRANCISCO DE ZURBARÁN (Fuente de Cantos, Badajoz, 1598 – Madrid, 1664); 18th century.
“Saint Bruno,”
Oil on canvas mounted on panel.
It has been restored.
It has a 19th-century frame.
Measurements: 75 x 53 cm; 80 x 58 cm (frame).
This depiction of Saint Bruno, founder of the Carthusian Order, shows the saint clad in the congregation’s characteristic white habit, holding a cross and gazing upward in an attitude of deep spiritual contemplation. At his feet lies the globe, a symbol of the rejection of worldly goods and the renunciation of earthly vanities, one of the fundamental principles of Carthusian life.
The work shows a clear dependence on the models created by Francisco de Zurbarán, especially in the treatment of the white habit, whose striking volumetric presence stands out against a neutral, dark background. The intense contrast of light, a legacy of Baroque tenebrism, lends monumentality to the figure and shapes the folds of the fabric with a remarkable sculptural quality. Likewise, the face and hands are rendered with marked naturalism, a characteristic feature of Spanish devotional painting of the Golden Age.
Although painted in the 18th century, the work retains the sobriety, contemplation, and spiritual strength characteristic of the Zurbaranesque tradition. The compositional austerity, the limited color palette, and the focus on the figure of the saint reinforce the meditative character of the image, conceived to inspire the viewer’s devotion and religious reflection.
