DESCRIPTION

SEBASTIÁN MARTÍNEZ DOMEDEL (Jaén, c. 1615 – Madrid, 1667).
“Saint Peter the Penitent.”
Oil on canvas.
Bears stamps on the reverse.
Measurements: 51 x 40 cm.
In this devotional painting, the face of the apostle Peter is turned toward heaven, imploring divine intervention. His features reveal the characteristic style of the Baroque painter Martínez Domedel, whose aged male figures—rendered with a naturalistic touch and their faces illuminated by bright, watery eyes—recur in several compositions. The overhead light skillfully highlights his prominent cheekbones and curly beard. The intense expressiveness of this figure is worth comparing to those the painter used in the Evangelists at Jaén Cathedral. Specifically, the definition of the face and its expressiveness are very reminiscent of Saint Luke. The wrinkles furrowing the forehead have been rendered in a style characteristic of Martínez Domedel. The specialist Rafael Mantas Fernández (Institute of Jaén Studies, Jaén, 2019) defines his work as follows: “He displays great pictorial qualities in the rendering of the anatomies of his sacred images, which embody real-life figures taken from the street...with a psychological tension that inspired 17th-century worshippers to pray, perfectly fulfilling the Tridentine tenets of the time.”
Palomino places Sebastián Martínez Domedel in Jaén, where he trained under Antonio García Reinoso. His style is eclectic and marked by a strong influence of naturalist painting, as well as parallels with other contemporary artists such as Antonio del Castillo, Alonso Cano, and José de Ribera. His training began in Jaén in his father’s studio, where he acquired the basic skills of the art of painting. He was able to complete his studies with the local painter Cristóbal Vela Cobo. He later moved to Córdoba, a period that enriched his style as he came into contact with artists of the time. After his years of apprenticeship, he quickly became the most renowned painter in the city of Jaén. Around the 1650s and 1660s, his style reached maturity, and he was commissioned by major religious institutions and prominent civilian figures in 17th-century society. He spent the final years of his life in Madrid, where he was appointed court painter to Philip IV. His repertoire of images and compositional techniques expanded after viewing the works of major artists at the Royal Sites and, above all, at the Royal Monastery of El Escorial.
