BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Spanish School, 16th century.
“The Holy Burial.”
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 147 x 176 cm.
The scene brings together several figures participating in the sacred mourning, including Saint John the Evangelist, the Virgin Mary, the holy women, and the disciples who support the lifeless body of Jesus. The subject, deeply emotional and spiritual, was one of the most common themes in religious painting during the Spanish Renaissance.
The composition is organized around the body of Christ, which occupies the visual center of the work and serves as the narrative focal point. His pale, lifeless form is marked by the more intense hues of the garments surrounding him, underscoring the drama of the event. The figures are clustered closely around the body, creating a sense of intimacy and reverence that invites the viewer to share in the sorrow of the scene. Far from a heroic depiction, the artist emphasizes the human dimension of suffering and loss.
From a stylistic perspective, the painting reveals characteristics typical of the 16th-century Spanish school, marked by the assimilation of Italian Renaissance forms and, at the same time, by a deeply religious sensibility. The figures are moderately idealized, as seen in their serene faces and harmonious proportions, while the depiction of emotions seeks to inspire devotion in the faithful. The lighting, focused on the main figures and enhanced by the presence of a candle, creates a strong contrast between light and shadow that intensifies the atmosphere of solemnity and contemplation.
The 16th-century Spanish school developed against a backdrop of intense religious and cultural renewal. Amid the rise of Humanism and on the eve of the Counter-Reformation, artists sought to create images capable of clearly conveying sacred narratives and inspiring piety. The depiction of the Passion of Christ played a central role in this endeavor, becoming a means of reflecting on sacrifice, redemption, and the hope of salvation.
