DESCRIPTION

Italian School; c. 1500.
“Saint Margaret.”
Oil on panel.

Measurements: 145 x 57.5 x 8 cm.
The depiction focuses on the figure of the martyred saint, presented in a solemn, frontal pose, in keeping with the devotional styles of the period. Saint Margaret is depicted with her traditional iconographic attributes: the palm of martyrdom and the dragon subdued at her feet, a creature associated with the legend of her captivity and triumph over the forces of evil. The rope connecting the saint to the animal visually emphasizes the idea of faith’s dominion over temptation and sin, transforming the image into an allegory of Christian fortitude.
The painting retains characteristics typical of the early 16th-century Italian tradition. The figure is depicted with a marked sense of monumental dignity, while the rendering of the folds in her garments and the delicacy of her facial features reveal the Renaissance interest in harmony, idealized beauty, and compositional balance. The depiction seeks to convey serenity and contemplation rather than drama, reflecting a spirituality based on contemplation and moral exemplarity.
The Italian school of the late 15th and early 16th centuries was marked by the search for a balance between naturalism, idealization, and spirituality. Artists developed a visual language capable of representing the human body and space with greater realism, without sacrificing the symbolic and religious content that defined much of the artistic production of the period. Images of saints occupied a prominent place in this context, offering models of virtue and examples of Christian life for believers.
