DESCRIPTION

“Allegory of the Seasons.”
Oil on panel.
Measurements: 21 x 62 cm.
This painting explores a theme deeply rooted in the symbolic and decorative tradition of modern Europe: the cyclical representation of time through the seasons of the year. The composition is organized into four horizontal registers that function as successive episodes of a visual narrative, in which human figures, idealized landscapes, and specific natural elements evoke seasonal changes. The abundance of flowers and fruits, trees in various stages of growth, and the characters’ diverse activities constitute an iconographic repertoire intended to express the renewal, fullness, maturity, and decline of nature—understood not only as climatic phenomena but also as metaphors for the cycles of human existence and the universal order.
The work’s artistic language reflects a distinctly eighteenth-century sensibility, characterized by a taste for narrative grace, decorative elegance, and the poetic evocation of the landscape. The figures, small in scale and subordinate to the natural setting, are integrated into idyllic scenes where nature takes center stage. The warm color palette, dominated by ochres, browns, and greens softened by delicate reddish and white accents, helps create a serene and refined atmosphere. The composition prioritizes visual harmony over meticulous detail, encouraging a contemplative viewing experience in which lighting effects and spatial depth reinforce the idealized nature of the composition as a whole.
From a historical-artistic perspective, the work belongs to the tradition of the 18th-century Italian school, which drew on landscape models developed since the Baroque period and was enriched by the decorative spirit characteristic of the Rococo. The influence of the Arcadian landscape—inspired by classical antiquity and an idealized vision of nature—is particularly evident in the presence of architectural ruins, pastoral scenes, and figures who seem to exist in a timeless world.
