The arquebus-wielding angels represent one of the most distinctive motifs in Andean viceregal painting. Emerging in the Cuzco region in the late 17th century and widely developed during the 18th century, this iconography transformed the members of the heavenly host into armed courtiers, with no equivalent precedent in the European tradition.

This work embodies this model through a composition of pronounced frontality, dominated by the figure of the archangel and the intense spread of his red wings. The arquebus, held vertically, reinforces his protective role, while his attire combines a breastplate, puffed sleeves, lace, an embroidered kilt, and adorned boots. The meticulous attention paid to the fabrics and ornaments, together with the saturated color palette and gilded motifs, reflects the characteristic decorative style of the Cuzco workshops.

The richness of the costume, the prominence of the large wings, and the clarity with which the iconography is preserved make this painting a representative example of one of the most emblematic themes of the 18th-century Cuzco school.
