DESCRIPTION

Viceroyal-era school; 18th century.
“Our Lady of Perpetual Help.”
Oil on canvas.
It has a crack in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 64.5 x 50 cm.
From a stylistic perspective, the painting embodies the distinctive artistic language that characterizes much of the 18th-century viceregal school, resulting from the local adaptation of European pictorial models to an American sensibility. One can see a preference for idealized faces, soft contours, elegant poses, and a meticulous depiction of textiles—particularly evident in the Virgin’s delicate veil, rendered with a profusion of lines and ornamental motifs. The contrast between the warm tones of the flesh and the deep blues and greens of the drapery also lends the work a marked chromatic richness. One of the most appealing aspects of the work is precisely the treatment of the sheer garments and lace, which reveals the importance that viceregal painting placed on the depiction of fabrics, embroidery, and ornaments. This penchant for meticulous detail, combined with the use of dark backgrounds and the presence of symbolic elements, is part of a tradition rooted in the Spanish Baroque but which took on its own distinctive features in the Americas.
The composition of this *María Santísima del Patrocinio* reflects that tradition and also bears witness to the role that Marian images played in the religious life of the viceregal world. Her approachable, almost domestic character makes the protective Virgin a figure accessible to the faithful, while still remaining an object of veneration and prestige.
