One can see a preference for idealized faces, soft contours, elegant poses, and a meticulous depiction of textiles—particularly evident in the Virgin’s delicate veil, rendered with a profusion of lines and ornamental motifs. The contrast between the warm tones of the flesh and the deep blues and greens of the drapery also lends the work a marked chromatic richness. One of the most appealing aspects of the work is precisely the treatment of the sheer garments and lace, which reveals the importance that viceregal painting placed on the depiction of fabrics, embroidery, and ornaments.
