The composition follows a devotional model that was widely accepted in 18th-century Spanish painting, characterized by the concentration of the main figures in the foreground, the prominence of the Virgin, and the presence of numerous angels that envelop the scene in a heavenly atmosphere. The color scheme, dominated by the reddish and blue tones of the Virgin’s garments, together with the delicate rendering of the children’s faces, reflects the pictorial language associated with Tovar’s Sevillian and courtly milieu.
Particularly striking is the profusion of cherub heads and small angels, a common device in Spanish Baroque painting to emphasize the supernatural nature of the scene. The arrangement of these figures around the Virgin creates a sort of celestial frame that directs the viewer’s gaze toward the center of the composition.The attribution to the circle of Alonso Miguel de Tovar places the work within the context of an artist trained in the Sevillian tradition and closely connected to the pictorial models of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, whose influence is particularly evident in the sweetness of the child figures and the gentle character of the religious depictions. Tovar was noted for his mastery of the master’s style, even going so far as to restore some of Murillo’s works for the Seville Cathedral. Summoned to the court by Isabel de Farnesio, he was appointed court painter to Philip V in 1726. His work, which draws on the Sevillian tradition and Murillo’s delicate style, is today represented in major collections such as the Prado Museum, the National Gallery in London, and the Louvre Museum.
