A portrait of a man painted in Antwerp around 1590–1595, in the artistic circle of Frans Pourbus the Younger. The subject, whose identity remains unknown, is depicted in a half-length portrait, dressed in a sober black suit that contrasts with the brightness of the large white ruff. He holds a glove in one hand, a detail traditionally associated with social distinction that helps emphasize the subject’s dignity and refinement.

The composition follows the conventions of late 16th-century Flemish portraiture, characterized by restrained gestures, meticulous depiction of fabrics, and special attention to the individualization of the face.

The painting is of particular interest due to its stylistic proximity to Frans Pourbus II, a connection noted in 2025 by the specialist Dr. Fred G. Meijer. The source places the artist among those active in Antwerp in the early 1590s and also highlights affinities with Adriaen Thomasz. Key, one of the city’s leading portraitists during the preceding decades. Key’s influence was also evident in Pourbus’s early period, before he developed the sophisticated courtly style that would lead him to work for some of Europe’s leading courts.

Particularly significant is the existence of another portrait that likely depicts the same subject, identified by Fred Meijer and auctioned at Sotheby’s London in 1990 under an attribution—then considered erroneous—to the circle of Michiel van Mierevelt. This coincidence suggests that the subject must have held a position of sufficient prominence to be portrayed on more than one occasion.

The grandson of Pieter Pourbus and son of Frans Pourbus the Elder, Frans Pourbus II belonged to one of the great dynasties of Flemish painters. After his early years in Antwerp, he went on to have a brilliant international career as a court portraitist: he worked for Archduke Albert and Archduchess Isabella Clara Eugenia in Brussels, for Vincenzo Gonzaga in Mantua, and, from 1609 onward, for Marie de’ Medici in Paris. His refined style, characterized by technical precision, elegance, and meticulous depiction of clothing, exerted a significant influence on European court portraiture in the early 17th century.
