This portrait of a child stands out for the richness of its composition and the delicacy with which it combines courtly representation with a more intimate dimension. The girl is seated before a large curtain, accompanied by a small dog resting on her lap and holding a bouquet of flowers in one hand. The column behind her and the view of the landscape complete a composition designed to emphasize the subject’s social status.

Particular care is evident in the rendering of the clothing, rendered in vivid greens, reds, and blues that are hallmarks of the girl’s lightness of face and fur. The girl’s frontal and serene pose reinforces the representational nature of the image, while the dog introduces a sense of intimacy and, within the 17th-century portraiture tradition, can also be associated with values such as loyalty.

Within the Germanic context, the work is part of the court portraiture of the second half of the 17th century, marked by the assimilation of styles of Flemish and Dutch origin. The setting and the presence of flowers and the animal thus combine solemnity and warmth—a formula particularly well-suited to child portraits.
