The painter Julián Ibáñez de Aldecoa trained as a disciple of Mr. Anselmo Guinea and Mr. Ronquero and Mr. Ferrant. He later moved to Paris to further his artistic studies at the Colarossi Academy. He took part in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions in Madrid in 1897, 1901 and 1917, and also exhibited his paintings at the Bilbao Art Salon (1915 and 1916) and the Legorghen Salon (1924 and 1925). He also exhibited at the Salón La Perfecta in San Sebastián (1916), the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao (1919), the Salón Witcomb in Rosario, Argentina (1922 and 1927) and the Salón Delclaux in Bilbao (1933). He also took part in group exhibitions such as the Modern Art Exhibitions held in Bilbao in 1901, 1906, 1910 and 1913, the Basque Artists' Exhibitions in Tolosa (1913) and San Sebastián (1928), the "Second Exhibition of Basque Artists" held at the Museum of Modern Art in Bilbao in 1932 and the Basque Art Exhibition held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Montevideo in 1943, among others. After his death, his work formed part of group exhibitions such as "Great masters of Basque painting" (Bilbao, Windsor gallery, 1979), "Great masters of the 19th-20th centuries" (Bilbao, Eurogalerías de Arte Llamas, 1995) or "Basque painting of the 19th-20th centuries" (Madrid, Castelló 120 gallery, 1998), among others. Throughout his career, Ibáñez de Aldecoa produced works mainly centred on portraits of Basque types, achieving many well-deserved successes. He also cultivated mural painting, and had a studio in which painters such as Ángel Garavilla were trained. Julián Ibáñez de Aldecoa is currently represented in the Fine Arts Museums of Bilbao and Vitoria, the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, the Laurak Bat Basque Centre in Buenos Aires and the Zazpirak Bat Basque Centre in Rosario (Argentina) and the collections of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the City Council of Cordoba (Argentina), among other private collections and centres.
