It was in the pastoral genre, locating cattle in wide Dutch meadows, where the painter Jan Bedijs Tom stood out mainly. This plain that opens towards a limpid horizon and that welcomes under the velvety lights of the sunset a peaceful group of cows and calves lying down or grazing next to a pond is a testimony of it.
Jan Bedijs Tom was a Dutch landscape and animal painter and printmaker. Born in was born in Boskoop, he was a pupil of Andreas Schelfhout. He also received instruction from Pieter Gerardus van Os. He later became an employee of Jan Willem van Borselsel. He lived and worked in The Hague, temporarily from 1871 to 1873 in Amsterdam. In 1871 he received the medal of the city of Amsterdam for his "Landscape with Cattle". He was a teacher of Hendrikus Alexander van Ingen, Johan Daniël Koelman and Pieter Stortenbeker; he advised Elias Stark. He painted and drew landscapes with cattle; he also executed etchings. In 1880, he participated in exhibitions in Amsterdam and The Hague.
