In this painting there are clear echoes of the Dutch school of the Baroque period, a key influence among the painters of the 19th and 20th century in Holland as well as in other European countries. It is a popular scene, related to the genre painting of the 17th century. In it we see a woman sitting in a stable, receiving the visit of a neighbor who looks out the window in a gesture of great everyday life.
During the 17th century, genre painting meant the vindication of the popular, and this idea was taken up again at the end of the 19th century, after the appearance of realism and the revaluation of genre themes. The nineteenth-century painters frequently drank from the sources of the past, within the context of historicism, but always being the baroque past itself one of the most important sources.
