BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

MARCILLO DE TORRES (Spain, 19th century).
"Exit from the church after the baptism".
Gouache on paper.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 85 x 73 cm; 96,5 x 84,5 cm (frame).

In this gouache, Marcillo de Torres, artist specialized in gallant scenes of the XIX century, captures the happy exit of a family of the church after the baptism of his son. The guests are grouped around the protagonists, while two figures lead the procession, blowing bugles and throwing flowers. Marcillo de Torres delights in the representation of the environment: a temple whose portico is presided over by the Immaculate Conception. The scene, with a clear Spanish imprint, shows a notable influence of eighteenth-century aesthetics, although the technique is presented with a distinctly modern perspective.
