HENRI JEHIN (Belgium,1811-1880)
"Garland of flowers", 1855.
Oil on elm root board.
Dated on the back.
Measurements: 46 x 33 cm; 65 x 52 cm (frame).
In this painting, Jehin organizes with meticulous precision a wreath of intertwined flowers, where each petal and leaf are executed with an almost botanical delicacy. The work combines chromatic exuberance with a rigorous ornamental order, revealing not only a profound knowledge of the natural world, but also a stylistic awareness inherited from the Flemish and Rococo traditions. This garland not only celebrates the ephemeral beauty of the flower, but also constitutes an affirmation of painting as a high decorative art, founded on precision, harmony and visual splendor.
Henri Jehin was a Belgian painter who specialized in flower painting, as well as a maker of art objects and an amateur musician. His work is part of the rich tradition of decorative painting of the 19th century in Belgium, standing out especially in the technique of oil on wood, with a remarkable attention to detail and an aesthetic sensibility close to ornamental naturalism.
He practiced his activity in Spa, a small town in the province of Liège, famous for its spas, but also for its craft and artistic production, in particular for the so-called "Spa wood", a local specialty that combined craftsmanship with decorative painting. In this cultural environment, Jehin developed a refined and meticulous style that soon earned him recognition not only in Belgium, but also in artistic circles in France and England.
His participation in various international exhibitions brought him a growing reputation. He was awarded a medal at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, a distinction that consolidated his international projection. Subsequently, he received two more medals at the Universal Exhibitions in Paris in 1855 and 1867, fundamental events for the validation of European art in the 19th century. These distinctions reflect both the technical quality of his works and the appreciation they aroused in the cosmopolitan context of his time.
In addition to his artistic work, Jehin was named "Fournisseur de S.A.R. le duc de Brabant" in 1864, an honorary title that recognized the official suppliers of the then Duke of Brabant, the future King Leopold II. This distinction was officially transformed, on February 17, 1866, into the title of "Fournisseur de S.M. Léopold II", reinforcing his position as a court artist and consolidating his prestige in the Belgian institutional sphere.
