BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
PAUL SIEFFERT (Paris, 1874-1957).
"Portrait of a lady with roses".
Oil on oval canvas.
With gilt frame with some flaws.
Signed on the left side.
Measurements: 85 x 72 cm; 107 x 94 cm (frame).
Paul Sieffert was an artist eminently of feminine nudes, although he was also dedicated to the hedonistic paintings like the one that now we bid. We see in this canvas a beautiful portrait of great chromatic and luminous delicacy. It presents an approach closer to costumbrismo than to the genre of portraiture itself, since it is a fragment of everyday reality: a bejeweled woman, with the sea in the background, holding a basket full of red roses.
Paul Sieffert trained in Paris, exhibiting his work at the Paris Salon from 1894. He was awarded the First Grand Prix de Rome in 1902 and the Diploma of Honor at Expo 1937. He was a member of the Society of French Artists, and also sat on its vetting committee. He was named Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1931. He is also known for his stained glass windows, decorative compositions and exotic illustrations.
