Set of urban views representing the city of Bruges in one case and Meissen. Both pieces coincide in showing a canal as the main resource of the composition. Both lead to a bridge that serves as a vanishing point to create the space of the scene, which in both works is completed with the sides closed by buildings and a last plane where other architectural complexes can be seen in the distance.
In the European school of the nineteenth century, the landscape acquired an unprecedented relevance, especially in the Netherlands, where it was consolidated as an autonomous genre and deeply valued by both artists and the public. Influenced by the long Dutch landscape tradition of the 17th century, 19th century painting underwent a renewal that combined direct observation of nature with a romantic sensitivity to atmosphere, light and feeling. Thus, landscape painting in the 19th century Netherlands became a connecting link between pictorial tradition, national spirit and incipient modernity.
