DESCRIPTION

MANUEL DE LA ROSA SAMPEDRO (Coria del Río, Seville, 1860 - Seville, 1924).
"Portrait of a woman.

Manuel de la Rosa was formed in the School of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría, in Seville, where he concluded his studies brilliantly at the age of twenty, and as a disciple of the painter Eduardo Cano. De la Rosa cultivated genre painting and flower painting, a genre in which he worked with the vocation of a specialist, reaching great perfection. He also painted many of the flowers that appear in Gonzalo Bilbao's canvases. In his vases, one can appreciate correctness and firmness in the drawing, courage in the painting and cleanness in the color, traits that led him to be considered unsurpassable by the critics of the time. The work of Manuel de la Rosa, Sevillian to the core, is rooted in the best of the Andalusian pictorial tradition, and specifically in the area of costumbrismo. The painter worked this genre with loving fruition and serene humility, elegantly exalting all kinds of themes, varied and always suggestive, ennobled by intimate poetic impulses. Throughout his life he took part in various official competitions; in 1885 he was awarded a medal at the Provincial Exhibition of Cadiz for his painting "Una andaluza" and, two years later, a gold medal for two "Floreros". He also participated in the National Exhibitions of Madrid, where he was awarded a third medal in 1887 and 1889. Manuel de la Rosa is currently represented in various collections, both public and private.
