Marinus Albertus Kiewiet was a Dutch painter born in The Hague, a city that at that time was already beginning to emerge as one of the most active artistic centers of the Netherlands. Although his beginnings were linked to the craft of house painting, which was common in many working families of the nineteenth century, Kiewiet soon found in artistic painting a freer avenue of expression, moving over time from the functional brush to the creative brush.
In 1851 he moved to Leiden, where he established his permanent residence. It was there that he developed most of his pictorial work, especially focused on the Dutch landscape. His outdoor scenes sensitively capture everyday life in natural settings: sandy paths lost among trees, open fields crossed by peasants or fishermen, solitary figures crossing the forest or pulling a cart in the midst of rural calm. They are landscapes built with a leisurely gaze and a stroke that suggests both detail and atmosphere, in which nature becomes the true protagonist and the human being just another guest, almost always in harmony with the environment.
