Painting of the Flemish school of the XIX century presented with a narrative language and at the same time moralizing, it reflects both the pictorial tradition of the north of Europe and the interest for the genre and social scenes.
The composition is set in a winter landscape: a small village with snowy roofs can be seen in the background, while the foreground is dominated by a group of people gathered in front of the church, whose bell tower rises on the left. The snow, the bare trees and the gray light of the sky reinforce the climate of austerity and seclusion typical of winter, while serving as a frame for a scene charged with social and religious significance.
The protagonists are the inhabitants of the village: women wrapped in headdresses and cloaks, children begging or playing, old people leaning on canes and, in the center, an elegantly dressed young lady who, with a serene and pious gesture, seems to give alms to a child. The contrast between the richness of her clothes and the humble clothing of the poor underlines the central message: Christian charity as a social and moral virtue.
The pictorial treatment preserves the Flemish taste for detail: the folds of the fabrics, the faces of the characters, the texture of the snow and the architecture are represented with almost meticulous precision. However, the scene is not reduced to description; there is a clear narrative intention in it, a moral reading that links with the customs and religious values that still dominated much of Europe in the nineteenth century.
