Painter of the last quarter of the 19th century, Josep Juncosa developed his career in the Barcelona town of Vilanova i la Geltrú, specializing in genre themes and portraits of popular characters, captured in a naturalistic, lively and expressive style, inherited from the great masters of the Spanish and Dutch Baroque. His work also reveals the influence of his teacher, the painter Simón Gómez, and especially of his first period. Throughout his career he held solo exhibitions and took part in group exhibitions, such as the Exhibition held in Vilanova in 1912, which showed the production of painters from that town.
