EUGÈNE DESHAYES (Paris, 1862-1939).
"Sunset on the Algerian coast".
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower margin.
Measurements: 50,5 x 61 cm; 75,5 x 87 cm (frame).
Vibrant painting by Eugène Deshayes, which captures a spectacular coastal landscape of North Africa at a time of intense evening light.
The scene is framed by dense vegetation on either side. The trees and bushes in the foreground, with their twisted leaves and branches tinged with warm colors, act as a backdrop that directs the viewer's gaze to the center of the scene. This framing creates a sense of intimacy and discovery, as if the viewer has found this privileged vantage point.
The dominant element in the center is an imposing rock cliff rising vertically above the sea. The title of the work is confirmed in the treatment of color: the rock is bathed in the intense light of the sunset, which tinges it with reddish, orange and bright pink tones, highlighting it dramatically from the blue of the sea and sky.
The use of color is the most notable feature. Deshayes uses a high, saturated palette, employing charged brushstrokes of vibrant greens in the trees and a wide range of ochres, golds and earth tones in the terrain and foliage on the right, which seems to burn in the dying light. The reflections in the deep blue water are equally intense and broken, indicating the turmoil of the surface. The brushwork is loose, energetic and highly textured, especially in the foliage.
Eugène Deshayes studied fine arts at the School of Fine Arts in Algeria, as well as being part of the renowned Barbizon school thanks to his scenic landscapes. During the years 1848 and 1867, Deshayes exhibited his works regularly at the Paris Salon, obtaining great recognition and success for his small and delicate landscapes, which came to be compared with those of Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Eugène Boudin. His style is characterized by a combination of realism and romanticism, where natural scenes are portrayed with great detail and a focus on atmosphere and light. Some of his most important works are displayed in institutions such as the Louvre Museum or the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
