Circle of FEDERICO DE MADRAZO Y KUNTZ (Rome, 1815 - Madrid, 1894).
"Isabel II".

Measurements: 122 x 97 cm; 153 x 127 cm (frame).
Painting made following the model preserved in the Museum of Romanticism painted by Federico de Madrazo. It is an image conceived not only as a physical representation of the monarch, but also as a symbolic construction of her authority, dignity and historical legitimacy.
From the point of view of pictorial quality, the work stands out for its technical refinement, especially in the treatment of the face, where the brushstrokes are soft and precise, seeking a restrained idealization. The attention to detail in the fabrics, jewels and ornamental elements responds to a careful and elegant painting, typical of the academic portrait.
Federico de Madrazo's circle was characterized by a clear influence of academicism and by the inheritance of the great tradition of European portraiture, especially French. Unlike previous stages, such as the Baroque or the more rigid Neoclassicism, Romanticism introduces a greater psychological sensitivity, visible in the serene and controlled expression of the queen. However, this introspection is always subordinated to decorum and the institutional function of the image.
