DESCRIPTION
THOMAS BARRETT (Nottingham, 1845 - 1924)
"Costumbrista scene".
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 42 x 54 cm; 62,5 x 75 cm (frame).
The oil that we show represents a daily scene outdoors. The presence of domestic and architectural elements places the scene in a recognizable context, while the careful natural illumination models the volumes and creates a warm and enveloping atmosphere. The brushstroke, balanced between precision and ease, allows the artist to clearly define the figures without losing freshness in the treatment of the background, achieving a sensation of depth and visual harmony. The whole reflects a remarkable mastery of color and composition, characteristic of British genre painting of the late nineteenth century.
Thomas Barrett was a British painter and printmaker specializing in landscapes, genre scenes and coastal subjects. He trained at the Nottingham School of Art, where he later taught, and developed a career linked to both teaching and artistic practice. He was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and one of the first members of the Staithes group, a renowned colony of artists in the north of England who worked in direct contact with nature and everyday life.
