DESCRIPTION
Follower of DAVID ROBERTS (Stockbridge, Edinburgh, 1796 - London, 1864) ; XIX century.
"View of the Giralda".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 56 x 43 cm; 62 x 48 cm (frame).
This work is inscribed in the tradition of the orientalist and traveler romanticism of the XIX century, clearly influenced by David Roberts, famous for his monumental views of Spain and the Orient. The Giralda is presented as the absolute protagonist, elevated and slender, treated with a marked scenographic sense that emphasizes its historical and symbolic value.
The artist adopts a picturesque look, combining architectural precision with an evocative atmosphere: the soft light, the hallmarks of shadow and the inclusion of small human figures provide scale and everyday life, typical features of the language of Roberts and his followers.
David Roberts was a leading Scottish painter of 19th century Orientalism, famous for his scenes of Egypt, the Holy Land and the Near East, as well as for his detailed lithographs based on travels made between 1838 and 1840. He began his career as a theatrical set painter, training in Edinburgh and working in theaters and circuses, which influenced his scenographic and monumental sense.
