BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

GUILLAUME VLOEBERGH (1884 - 1967).
"Sunny day".
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower left corner. Signed on the back
Measurements: 106 x 151 cm.
The work is placed in the context of Belgian painting in the late nineteenth century and early decades of the twentieth century, at a time when the late impressionism and regional luminism dialogued with the symbolist and post-impressionist drifts. The scene, a wooded path in autumn, crossed by a female figure driving a cow, takes up the traditional rural motif, but reinterprets it from a sensibility centered on the atmospheric and chromatic experience of the landscape.
The composition is structured by the rhythmic verticality of the trunks, which frame the space and generate depth through a succession of planes sifted by the light. However, the true protagonist is color: the pictorial surface vibrates in a dense weave of fragmented brushstrokes, where greens, ochers, yellows and reds intertwine to suggest the thickness of the foliage and the irradiation of filtered light. The human figure, reduced in scale and integrated into the environment, underlines the modern conception of landscape as a lived rather than narrated space.
