DESCRIPTION

Viceroyalty School, Guatemala, c. 1828.
"Vera effigie del Señor Sepultado de la Merced de Ciudad de Guatemala".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Presents restorations.
Measurements: 74 x 85 cm.
This devotional painting testifies the persistence of the baroque religiosity in the first years of the Central American republican period. The work represents the "vera efigie" of the Buried Lord of the church of La Merced in Guatemala City, one of the most venerated processional images during the solemn days of Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Popularly associated with the "Sepultado del cucurucho", the image refers to the penitential fervor that characterizes the Guatemalan Holy Week. The term "cucurucho" alludes to the devotees who carry the processional platforms, dressed in purple or black and covered with hoods, symbols of penitence, anonymity and repentance. Thus, the work not only documents a specific sacred image, but also crystallizes a collective practice: the ritual theatricalization of mourning for the death of Christ and the communal experience of forgiveness.

The composition shows the processional passage with the recumbent Christ in the center, arranged inside an urn, emphasizing his condition as a dead body and object of contemplation. In the lower area there is a barely legible legend, a frequent resource in this type of representation to authenticate the image and reinforce its character as a faithful portrait. The pictorial frame is enriched with decorative borders and small figures of saints and angels, integrating the scene into a broader devotional program.
Of naive workmanship, the painting favors narrative clarity over technical sophistication. The frontality, the direct chromatism and the symmetrical organization underline its testimonial and pious function more than its academic artistic ambition.
