DESCRIPTION
JOSEP MARÍA TAMBURINI DALMAU (Barcelona, 1856 - 1932).
"A nymph".
Oil on canvas glued to board.
With handwritten inscription on the back: with the artist's name, title and reference to auction at Balclis (2004).
Measurements: 25 x 20 cm; 39,3 x 34,5 cm (frame).
Delicate scene of symbolist character starring a young woman surrounded by flowering trees and luminous vegetation. The figure, in a self-absorbed attitude, gathers flowers in the fold of her dress, poetically integrating herself into the natural environment.
Tamburini achieves here an intimate and lyrical scene, in which nature and human figure merge in an image of evocative and almost dreamlike tone.
Josep Maria Tamburini was an outstanding painter and art critic of Catalan modernism. He began his career in history painting and anecdotal realism, later evolving towards a symbolist language influenced by Pre-Raphaelism. He achieved recognition as early as 1888 with a silver medal at the Universal Exposition in Barcelona and received other outstanding awards in 1898 and 1911.
He was a professor at the School of La Lonja, a member of the Board of Museums of Barcelona and co-founder of the Artistic and Literary Society of Catalonia. His work is preserved in institutions such as the MNAC.
