DESCRIPTION
NORBERT GOENEUTTE (Paris, 1854 - Auvers sur oise, 1894).
"Paris".
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 39 x 46 cm.
The painting represents a view of Paris captured from an urban perspective that reflects the atmosphere of the French capital in the last decades of the nineteenth century. The composition focuses on the architecture and the atmosphere of the city. The brushwork is detailed and dynamic, with special attention to the effects of light and chromatic vibration.
Its author, Norbert Gœneutte, was a painter, engraver and illustrator trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he initially studied under Isidore Pils. During his youth he joined the Parisian artistic circles linked to the environment of Édouard Manet, frequenting meeting places for artists and intellectuals where he coincided with figures such as Edgar Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. This environment had a notable influence on his pictorial sensibility, oriented towards the direct observation of modern life and urban landscapes. Although he was also an outstanding engraver, producing more than two hundred plates during his career, his painting reflects a synthesis between the realism inherited from the academic tradition and the new concerns of Parisian painting at the end of the century. Urban views, such as this representation of Paris, show his interest in the city and the immediate capture of the atmosphere, placing his production in the orbit of naturalism and the artistic environment that surrounded impressionism. He died prematurely in 1894 in Auvers-sur-Oise.
