BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

RICARDO MARÍN Y LLOVET (Barcelona, 1874 - Mexico, 1942).
"Bullfighting scene".
Mixed media on cardboard.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 56,5 x 76,5 cm (frame).
The loose and gestural stroke of the artist suggests rather than describes the details, prioritizing the sensation of movement and tension of the moment. This technique, characteristic of Marín and Llovet, allows him to capture the essence of the bullfighting spectacle with speed and visual force. The work reflects both the cultural atmosphere of late 19th and early 20th century Spain and the artist's interest in popular and everyday scenes.
A draftsman and watercolorist, Ricardo Marín studied law, although he never practiced as a lawyer. At the beginning of his career he published excellent drawings, with a modernist influence, in magazines of the time such as "El Gato Negro" and "Hispania". Later settled in Madrid, he achieved great popularity as an illustrator of bullfighting scenes, and collaborated with "ABC", "Madrid Cómico", "La Ilustración Española y Americana", "Blanco y Negro" and "La Esfera", among other publications. He also created the humorous weekly magazine "El Gran Bufón", and exhibited his works in Paris and London. He also illustrated a notable edition of "Don Quixote", as well as works by Eugenio d'Ors, Benavente, Martínez Sierra and others. He went into exile in 1939, and in Mexico continued his career in various publishing projects.
