The style recalls the influence of Landseer in the romantic treatment of landscape and narrative, with loose brushstrokes, warm tones and a strong play of light and shadow. The composition conveys movement, suspense and the relationship between man and nature, recurring themes in British painting of the period.
The work depicts a moment of tension during a hunt: a hunter, dressed in traditional costume, kilt and cap, points his weapon out of a cave or rock shelter, while a woman beside him holds a spear or staff and watches cautiously. The dramatic lighting, which enters from outside, contrasts with the gloom of the cave's interior and directs attention to the main action. In the background, the presence of a child is suggested, adding a narrative and emotional dimension to the scene.
