BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Cuzco School; XIX century.
"Virgin with Child".
Oil on canvas.
It presents faults in the pictorial surface.
Measurements: 94 x 72 cm.
Majestic and deeply devotional image of the Virgin Mary crowned, holding the Child Jesus. The composition, frontal and symmetrical, turns the Marian figure into an authentic celestial apparition: its pyramidal silhouette, amplified by the amplitude of the mantle, dominates the space with a solemn and enveloping presence. The Virgin wears an imperial crown and holds a rosary of red beads, underlining her role as mediator and Queen of Heaven. The Child, also crowned, blesses serenely while holding the orb, symbol of her universal dominion. Both are presented as sacred monarchs, integrating Christian iconography with a regal conception of divinity that was particularly appreciated in the Andean viceroyalty. The treatment of the clothing is one of the most dazzling aspects of the work. The mantle, richly decorated with a profusion of floral motifs on a golden background, displays an ornamental virtuosity characteristic of the Cuzco School. The luminous background, crossed by golden bursts that radiate from the figure, enhances the visionary character of the scene. The clouds surrounding the Virgin place her in a celestial environment, suspended between the earthly and the divine.
The Cuzco School, which emerged in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and continued with vitality in the nineteenth century, developed its own language from the encounter between European models and the creativity of its workshops. Among its distinctive features are the hieratic frontality, the reduction of the perspectival space, the chromatic intensity and the incorporation of decorative elements inspired by the local flora. In this painting, the large flowers that run along the dress and the plant motifs that frame the lower part reinforce this integration between the sacred and the natural American exuberance.
