Karl Hofmann was born in the bosom of an old local family linked with the art. He was an Austrian painter linked to the so-called Austrian "atmosphere impressionism" (Österreichischer Stimmungsimpressionismus), a current that sought to capture not only the appearance of the landscape, but also its emotional and luminous climate. He trained in Innsbruck and Vienna, where he also developed a parallel career as a gymnasium teacher for a long period. His artistic career places him in the milieu of prominent painters such as Emil Jakob Schindler, Tina Blau and Alfred Zoff, key figures in the renewal of landscape painting in Austria at the end of the 19th century.
Hofmann's output focused primarily on landscape, with a particular predilection for southern scenes, seascapes and coastal scenes, as well as views of his native region in the Tyrol. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he hardly cultivated still lifes and there are no known portraits in his oeuvre, which reinforces his identity as a landscape painter specializing in capturing atmospheres and light effects. In addition to his pictorial activity, Hofmann stood out for his interest in architecture. He designed and built the "Sonnenhof", a villa above the Lienz valley, considered one of the few pure examples of Jugendstil architecture in the region, largely preserved in its original state. Today, his works are in both private collections and public institutions, including the Lienz City Museum, located in Schloss Bruck, where part of his artistic legacy is preserved.
